Texas Volleyball 2026: Season Outlook & Program Overview

Original analysis of the Texas Longhorns program, coaching staff, and 2026 outlook.

    2026 Season Outlook

Texas begins 2026 ranked No. 2 nationally, and the framing in Austin is straightforward: last season ended earlier than it should have. The 2025 Longhorns went 26-4, earned a No. 1 seed, and swept Indiana in the Sweet 16 inside Gregory Gym — then lost the regional final at home to Wisconsin. Eleven players return. Jerritt Elliott made almost no portal moves, a deliberate signal that he believes the answer was already in the gym. Torrey Stafford and Cari Spears are both preseason All-Americans and Texas has arguably the deepest outside-hitter room in the country behind them, with junior Ella Swindle running the offense. The question is the same one as last year: middle blocker. Texas lost a starting middle to the portal and the rotation now leans on Nya Bunton (96 kills, 61 blocks in 2025) and Freshman All-SEC pick Taylor Harvey. If they hold up, the pins get one-on-one swings all year and Texas is a genuine title favorite. If the middle stalls, elite blocking teams get to sit on the pins.

    Program History & Tradition

Texas has won five national championships — the 1981 AIAW title plus NCAA championships in 1988, 2012, 2022 and 2023, including back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. The Longhorns have reached the national title match nine times and are one of the sport's most consistent NCAA Tournament programs, with Gregory Gymnasium — roughly 4,000 seats, opened in 1930 — serving as one of the toughest home floors in college athletics. The move to the SEC in 2024 has only sharpened the program's national profile.

    Head Coach Spotlight

Jerritt Elliott is in his 26th season in Austin, having taken over the program in 2001. He has won three NCAA national championships (2012, 2022, 2023), reached 11 Final Fours, and averaged more than 25 wins per season. His system relies on quick first-tempo middle attack and aggressive serving, with hitters trained to score against any blocking scheme, and his staff routinely produces national coach-of-the-year candidates and head-coaching hires.

    What to Watch in 2026

Three revenge narratives are built into the schedule. Wisconsin, September 13 at Moody Center, is the team that ended Texas's 2025 season, in the building where last season's match drew a Texas regular-season record 10,899 fans. Nebraska, August 30 in Las Vegas, is the preseason No. 1 in Week 1 at the inaugural Players Era Showcase. SMU on September 9 is Averi Carlson's new team. Add Louisville on ABC at Bridgestone Arena and a September 25-27 SEC opening weekend at Tennessee and Kentucky, and the first six weeks decide the seeding conversation. The Final Four is in San Antonio, two hours from campus.

    Texas Volleyball 2026 Schedule Overview

    Last updated: August 21, 2026

The complete 2026 Texas Longhorns volleyball schedule is below: all 23 scheduled matches plus the SEC Tournament, with first-serve times in Central, venues, and confirmed broadcast assignments. The No. 2 Longhorns enter 2026 with unfinished business. Texas went 26-4 last season and earned a No. 1 NCAA seed before Wisconsin ended the run in the regional final in Gregory Gym. Jerritt Elliott, now in his 26th season in Austin, brings back 11 players from that team, including preseason All-America outside hitters Torrey Stafford and Cari Spears. The schedule gives them every chance to settle scores. Texas opens against Arizona State and Marquette at the AVCA First Serve in Milwaukee, heads to the inaugural Players Era Showcase in Las Vegas to face TCU and No. 1 Nebraska, plays Louisville on ABC at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, and hosts a Wisconsin rematch at Moody Center on September 13 — all before SEC play opens at Tennessee on September 25. Conference play brings an immediate two-match gauntlet at Tennessee and Kentucky, the in-state rivalry against Texas A&M on November 1, and Senior Day against LSU on November 15. The SEC Tournament follows November 20-24 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia, with NCAA Tournament selection in December and the Final Four in San Antonio.

Texas opens the 2026 season tomorrow against Arizona State at the AVCA First Serve in Milwaukee, 6:00 pm CT on FS1.

Note on the Wisconsin match: it is at Moody Center, not Gregory Gym. Texas moved it to the larger arena expecting a crowd well beyond Gregory's roughly 4,000 seats — last year's Moody Center match drew 10,899, a Texas regular-season volleyball attendance record. Ticketing and entry are different from a normal home match, so check your ticket carefully. Gregory Gym seats roughly 4,000 for volleyball, by a wide margin the smallest home venue of any national title contender, which is exactly why it is one of the hardest tickets in college sports.

    TV & Streaming Information

Texas is scheduled for nine appearances on ESPN networks during the 2026 regular season, and the slate is unusually spread across broadcasters because of the neutral-site events. ABC carries Louisville on September 6, the Broadway Block Party. ESPN has Wisconsin (Sept 13), at Kentucky (Sept 27), Florida (Oct 18) and Texas A&M (Nov 1). ESPN2 has the USC home opener (Sept 2). SEC Network has at Tennessee (Sept 25), Georgia (Oct 28) and the SEC Tournament, with the remaining SEC matches on SEC Network+. FS1 and FS2 carry the AVCA First Serve matches against Arizona State (Aug 22) and Marquette (Aug 24), and ACC Network has the SMU match in Dallas on September 9. SEC Network+ is not a subscription: it streams inside the ESPN app and requires a TV provider login that already carries SEC Network — it is not the same as ESPN+. Remaining networks are confirmed roughly 7-10 days before first serve and posted at TexasSports.com. This page updates as each is announced.

    Top Games to Watch

    • Texas vs. Wisconsin

Sun, Sept 13, 2:00 pm CT — Moody Center (ESPN)

The rematch. Wisconsin came into Gregory Gym in December and ended a 26-4 season in the regional final. Texas moved this one to Moody Center for the crowd, and it should be the loudest regular-season volleyball environment in the country this fall.

    • Texas at Nebraska

Sun, Aug 30, 2:30 pm CT — T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas

No. 2 vs. the preseason No. 1, in an NBA arena, at the inaugural Players Era Showcase, in Week 1. The two winningest programs of the last decade with a combined seven titles since 2012.

    • Texas at Louisville

Sun, Sept 6, 11:00 am CT — Bridgestone Arena (ABC)

The Broadway Block Party, and a rare volleyball match on network broadcast television. Texas beat Louisville for the 2022 national championship; this is the biggest audience the sport will get all season.

    • Texas at Kentucky

Sun, Sept 27, 12:00 pm CT — Memorial Coliseum (ESPN)

The SEC's defining rivalry, two days into conference play. Kentucky was the 2025 national runner-up and is chasing a 10th straight SEC title. Whoever wins in Lexington controls the league race from September onward.

    • Texas vs. Texas A&M

Sun, Nov 1, 12:00 pm CT — Gregory Gym (ESPN)

The rivalry is back on the volleyball calendar and A&M arrives as a national contender. Gregory Gym at capacity, the Wild Bunch behind the service line, on ESPN.

    Key Players to Know

    Torrey Stafford

    Outside Hitter · Junior

Preseason All-American and the Longhorns' primary terminator on the left side, part of arguably the deepest outside-hitter room in the country.

    Cari Spears

    Outside Hitter · Sophomore

The second half of a preseason All-America pin tandem, giving Texas two first-option attackers in the same rotation.

    Ella Swindle

    Setter · Junior

Runs the offense with the experience of a junior who has already played in the sport's biggest matches, including a regional final in Gregory Gym.

    Nya Bunton

    Middle Blocker · Redshirt Sophomore

Posted 96 kills and 61 blocks in 2025 and now steps into a full-time role in the season's biggest question mark, the middle.

    Taylor Harvey

    Middle Blocker · Sophomore

Freshman All-SEC in 2025. If she and Bunton hold up against elite blocking teams, the Texas pins get one-on-one swings all year.

    Venue Information

Gregory Gymnasium, 2101 Speedway, Austin, TX 78712, opened in 1930 and seats roughly 4,000 for volleyball — the smallest home venue of any national title contender, which is exactly why it is one of the hardest tickets in college sports. The Wild Bunch student section sits behind the service line and is widely credited with disrupting visiting servers more than any crowd in the sport. Doors generally open about 60 minutes before first serve. One 2026 home match, Wisconsin on September 13, is played at Moody Center instead, where last season's match drew a Texas regular-season record 10,899 fans.

    Season Expectations

The ceiling is a No. 1 overall seed and a return to the Final Four, which lands in San Antonio, a two-hour drive from campus and a destination this program has not reached since the 2023 title. The floor, with 11 returners and two preseason All-America pins, is another top-four seed and a regional final. Everything hinges on the middle: if Nya Bunton and Taylor Harvey hold up, Texas is a genuine title favorite; if the middle stalls, elite blocking teams get to sit on the pins.

    Q

When does the 2026 Texas volleyball season start?

    A

Texas opens Saturday, August 22 against Arizona State at the AVCA First Serve inside Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, first serve at 6:00 pm CT on FS1. The Longhorns face Marquette at the same event on August 24 before the home opener against USC on September 2.

    Q

What is Texas's full 2026 volleyball schedule?

    A

Texas plays 23 scheduled matches — eight non-conference and 15 SEC — plus the SEC Tournament in Savannah, Georgia from November 20-24 and the NCAA Tournament in December. The complete slate with dates, times, venues and TV is in the table above and updated as assignments are confirmed.

    Q

When does SEC play start for Texas in 2026?

    A

Conference play opens Friday, September 25 at Tennessee in Knoxville, followed immediately by a Sunday match at Kentucky on September 27. That opening weekend is the toughest two-match conference start any SEC team faces this season.

    Q

Is the Texas vs. Wisconsin match at Gregory Gym?

    A

No. The September 13 match against Wisconsin is at Moody Center, not Gregory Gymnasium. Texas moved the match to the larger arena to accommodate demand — last season's Moody Center match drew 10,899 fans, a Texas regular-season volleyball attendance record.

    Q

How many home matches does Texas play in 2026?

    A

Ten: nine at Gregory Gymnasium and one at Moody Center. The home slate includes USC, Wisconsin, Florida, Texas A&M, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and LSU on Senior Day.

    Q

How do I get Texas volleyball tickets?

    A

Season tickets typically sell out quickly each summer, with a limited single-match public sale opening later through TexasSports.com. Standing-room tickets are sometimes released on match day. Gregory Gym's roughly 4,000 seats make Texas volleyball one of the toughest tickets in college athletics.

    Q

Why is Gregory Gym so small?

    A

Gregory Gymnasium opened in 1930 and was never built as a modern arena. It seats about 4,000 for volleyball — smaller than any other title contender's home floor. The tight sightlines and low ceiling are precisely what make it one of the loudest buildings in the sport.

    Q

    What is the Wild Bunch?

    A

The Wild Bunch is the Texas volleyball student section, positioned behind the service line. It is widely credited with disrupting visiting servers more than any crowd in college volleyball and is a major part of Gregory Gym's home-court advantage.

    Q

What channel is Texas volleyball on?

    A

Coverage is split across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, SEC Network+, FS1, FS2 and ACC Network in 2026, depending on the event. Texas is scheduled for nine ESPN-network appearances in the regular season. Each row in the schedule table lists the confirmed outlet.

    Q

    Is SEC Network+ free?

    A

SEC Network+ is included at no extra charge if your TV provider carries SEC Network — you sign in through the ESPN app with those credentials. It is not sold separately and is not the same as ESPN+.

    Q

How can I watch Texas volleyball without cable?

    A

YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo all carry SEC Network and ESPN, and each provides the login required to stream SEC Network+ in the ESPN app. The September 6 Louisville match airs on ABC and is available over the air.

    Q

How many national championships has Texas volleyball won?

    A

Five. Texas won the AIAW national championship in 1981 and NCAA championships in 1988, 2012, 2022 and 2023 — including back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Three of the five came under current head coach Jerritt Elliott.

    Q

How did Texas volleyball finish in 2025?

    A

Texas went 26-4, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the regional final before losing to Wisconsin in Gregory Gymnasium. It was the program's second straight season ending short of the Final Four.

    Q

Where is Texas ranked heading into 2026?

    A

Texas is ranked No. 2 in the AVCA preseason coaches' poll, behind Nebraska — an opponent the Longhorns face in the season's opening week at the Players Era Showcase in Las Vegas.

    Q

Who is the Texas volleyball head coach?

    A

Jerritt Elliott, in his 26th season in Austin. He has led Texas to three NCAA national championships (2012, 2022, 2023), 11 Final Fours, and an average of more than 25 wins per season since taking over the program in 2001.

    Q

Who are Texas's best players in 2026?

    A

Outside hitters Torrey Stafford and Cari Spears are both preseason All-Americans, junior Ella Swindle returns at setter, and middle blockers Nya Bunton and Taylor Harvey — Freshman All-SEC in 2025 — step into larger roles. Texas returns 11 players from last season's No. 1 seed.

    Q

Who did Texas lose from last year's roster?

    A

Libero Emma Halter graduated, and middle blocker Ayden Ames and outside hitter Whitney Lauenstein entered the transfer portal. Texas added a 2026 signing class of setter Genevieve Harris, libero Emma Cugino and outside hitter Henley Anderson, plus reclassified middle blocker Camille Presley.

    Q

What is the Players Era Showcase?

    A

A new neutral-site volleyball event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Texas plays TCU on August 29 and No. 1 Nebraska on August 30 in the inaugural edition — one of the strongest early-season fields ever assembled outside the NCAA Tournament.

    Q

What conference does Texas volleyball play in?

    A

The Southeastern Conference. Texas moved from the Big 12 on July 1, 2024. The SEC plays a 15-match single round-robin schedule followed by the SEC Tournament, whose champion earns the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

    Q

When and where is the 2026 SEC Volleyball Tournament?

    A

November 20-24 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia, the second consecutive year Savannah hosts. Matches air on SEC Network and SEC Network+, with the champion receiving the SEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

    Q

Who is Texas's biggest volleyball rival?

    A

Nebraska is the defining national rivalry, with three NCAA title-match meetings. Texas A&M is the in-state rivalry. Within the SEC, Kentucky and Florida are the annual measuring sticks, and Wisconsin has become the most personal matchup after ending each of the last two Texas seasons.

    Q

When is Senior Day for Texas volleyball in 2026?

    A

Sunday, November 15 against LSU at Gregory Gymnasium, the final home match of the regular season. Ceremonies are typically held before first serve, so arrive early.

    Q

What time do doors open at Gregory Gym?

    A

Doors generally open about 60 minutes before first serve. For sold-out SEC matches, arriving early is strongly recommended, and standing-room holders should confirm entry details on the TexasSports.com event page.

Texas has won five national championships: the 1981 AIAW title plus NCAA championships in 1988, 2012, 2022 and 2023, including back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Three of the five came under current head coach Jerritt Elliott.

Elliott, in his 26th season in Austin, has reached 11 Final Fours and averaged more than 25 wins a season since taking over in 2001. Texas went 26-4 in 2025, earned a No. 1 NCAA seed and lost the regional final at home to Wisconsin.

The Longhorns enter 2026 ranked No. 2 in the AVCA preseason coaches' poll with 11 returners, and Gregory Gymnasium's roughly 4,000 seats remain one of the hardest tickets in college athletics.
