Conference realignment has redrawn the map of college volleyball. With Texas now in the SEC, Stanford and SMU in the ACC, and USC in the Big Ten, the 2026 season will be the first full year of college volleyball's new geography. Below is a quick orientation to the five conferences that produce nearly every NCAA Tournament regional host and almost every Final Four team. Big Ten Conference
The deepest league in college volleyball. Top to bottom, the Big Ten produces more Final Four teams than any other conference.
The Big Ten has won more NCAA women's volleyball national championships than any other conference, with Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin combining for double-digit titles. The 2026 expanded league adds USC to a brutal slate of weekly matchups in front of the largest crowds in college volleyball.
Southeastern Conference
Texas leads the SEC, but Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas A&M all bring NCAA-tournament-caliber depth.
With Texas joining in 2024–25, the SEC has become a true national-title contender from top to bottom. The Longhorns headline a conference also featuring traditional powers Kentucky and Florida and a rising Texas A&M program.
Atlantic Coast Conference
Three top-10 programs and a deep, coast-to-coast slate make the ACC one of college volleyball's most competitive leagues.
Pittsburgh, Stanford and Louisville have made the ACC a routine three-bid Final Four conference. With Stanford and SMU now in the league, the ACC stretches from California to Florida and produces nationally televised matchups every week.
Big 12 Conference
BYU sets the standard in a wide-open Big 12 that sends multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament every year.
After Texas's departure to the SEC, the Big 12 has become a free-for-all. BYU, Baylor and TCU lead a deep field with Arizona State, Kansas, Iowa State and Colorado all fighting for tournament position.
Big East Conference
Creighton continues to set the bar for the Big East, with deep NCAA tournament runs nearly every season.
The Big East has long been led by Creighton and Marquette, with the Bluejays consistently ranked in the AVCA top 25 and capable of upsetting Power Five opponents in the NCAA Tournament.
How the conferences compare in 2026
Each league brings a distinct identity. The Big Ten remains the deepest top-to-bottom league in the country — Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State and Minnesota routinely draw the largest crowds in college volleyball, and the conference has produced more national champions than any other. The SEC, fortified by Texas's arrival in 2024, now matches the Big Ten for championship-level firepower at the top. The ACC stretches coast-to-coast and reliably sends three or more teams to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament behind Pittsburgh, Stanford and Louisville. The Big 12, reshaped by Texas's departure, has become a wide-open free-for-all led by BYU, Baylor and TCU. The Big East, anchored by a perennial top-25 Creighton program, continues to punch above its weight in November.

Which conference is best in 2026?
By any reasonable strength-of-schedule metric, the Big Ten and SEC are 1A and 1B at the top. The Big Ten still has more title contenders top-to-bottom; the SEC has arguably the deepest top three with Texas, Kentucky and Tennessee. The ACC is a hair behind but routinely produces multiple Sweet 16 teams.
How many bids does each conference get to the NCAA Tournament?
The Big Ten typically lands 8–10 bids, the ACC and SEC 6–8 each, the Big 12 4–6, and the Big East 1–2. Final bid counts depend on at-large selection by the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee.
